ONE OF OUR MOST INTERESTING PROJECTS IS OUR PARTICIPATION IN THE FORMULA SAE COMPETITION – WHERE WE DESIGNED AND MADE A FEW CARS – BUT THIS IS THE IMPORTANT ONE.

OUR HOME FORMULA SAE TEAM ROAD ARROW FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE IS COMPETING IN ANOTHER CATEGORY NOW. APART FROM THE PETROL-POWERED CAR, THE TEAM IS RACING AN ELECTRIC ONE, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN SERBIA. (FSRA.STT.ORG.RS/, WWW.INSTAGRAM.COM/ROADARROWTEAM/ )
PLEASE NOTE, THAT THIS PROTOTYPE WAS CONCEIVED IN 2018., FULLY DEVELOPED IN 2019. FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE 2020. COMPETITIONS – UNFORTUNATELY CANCELED – FINALLY FINISHED IN 2021.

THIS IS NOT A MISTAKE, BUT A CALCULATED DECISION, TO LOWER THE POLAR MOMENT OF INERTIA & IMPROVE THE GENERAL FEEL.THIS CAR IS A BEAUTIFUL COMBINATION OF NEW AGE AND OLD SCHOOL ENGINEERING APPROACHES, AND ALSO THE PLACE THAT FORMED THE GLAGOL TEAM.

CUTTING EDGE WHERE IT MATTERS – SIMPLE WHERE IT DOESN’T.

ALTHOUGH NOT CHEAP BY ANY STRETCH OF IMAGINATION, THIS CAR WAS COMPLETED WITH MINIMAL WASTED RESOURCES, AND NO OVERENGINEERING, AS SUCH TEAMS TEND TO DO.

THIS IS THE 588V, 5.1KWH WATER-COOLED BATTERY PACK.
CONSISTING OF 140 LiPo CELLS, IT WAS CONSTRUCTED AND VALIDATED IN-HOUSE BY THE ROAD ARROW – EVEN THE BMS!

THE AWD IS POWERED BY 4X 12.5kW AMK® ELECTRIC MOTORS, WITH A COMBINED PEAK POWER OF MANY kW, EACH INDEPENDENTLY CONTROLLABLE BY OUR TORQUE VECTORING ALGORITHM.
EACH WHEEL PACKS, BESIDES THE 18 000 RPM AMK®, AN IN-WHEEL PLANETARY TRANSMISSION AND WATER COOLING FOR THE MOTOR.

HERE WE SEE THE CARBON FIBER COMPOSITE CHASSIS. IT FEATURES A UNIQUE SINGLE PIECE, NO BONDED SEAM CONSTRUCTION FROM A NEGATIVE MOULD, SHAPED TO USE THE GEOMETRICAL AND MATERIAL ADVANTAGES OF THE CFRP INFUSION TECHNOLOGY – (ALL) WHILE MEETING OR EXCEEDING FSAE REGULATIONS, ESPECIALLY SAFETY. ALSO WORTH MENTIONING ARE THE PRECISE AND INNOVATIVE INSERTS/FASTENING TECHNOLOGY – FOR BOTH HIGH AND LOW LOADS.

SUCH TECHNOLOGY MAKES ROOM FOR GOING FORWARD, OR, RATHER, LEFTWARD. OUR NEW CAR, “THE LOW POLAR MOMENT OF INERTIA SPECIAL”, FEATURES THE DRIVER AND THE BATTERY LOCATED SIDE BY SIDE, BOTH IN THEIR OWN SIDEPODS!

THIS IS OUR IN-WHEEL TRANSMISSION – A 11:1 GEAR RATIO, SINGLE STAGE PLANETARY GEARBOX. IT IS QUITE CHALLENGING TO DESIGN AND MAKE 4 INEXPENSIVE CUSTOM MADE GEARBOXES IN A FEW MONTHS, BUT ENTIRELY POSSIBLE WHEN CUTTING (THE RIGHT) CORNERS 🙂

NOTICE HOW THE WHEEL HUB IS THE WHEEL, AND THE RIM IS ONLY ON THE OUTER SIDE. AND HOW THE BRAKES HAD TO BE REMOVABLE TO FIT THE DISC AND CALIPERS THAT ARE JUST BIG ENOUGH.


THIS CAR IS FOCUSED ON MAXIMUM FSAE COMPETITION PERFORMANCE, NOT F1 MIMICRY!

WITH THE MASS CENTRALIZED, 50/50 WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION (FRONT/REAR) AND LOW COG – THE CAR SHOULD PROVE TO BE QUITE NIMBLE AROUND THE TRACKS. ESPECIALLY WITH OUR NO-NONSENSE DESIGNED SUSPENSION WITH DIRECT ACTUATION AND FRONT AND REAR ANTI ROLL BARS. THANKS TO THE SUSPENSION BEING MOUNTED UNDERNEATH THE CHASSIS, THE 10″ INCH WHEELS ON SLICKS ARE ON VERY LONG A-ARM WISHBONES, ESPECIALLY THE LOWER ONES, AROUND HALF A METER! PER SIDE!

THE SUSPENSION AND STEERING ARE ATTACHED TO THE OUTER SIDE OF THE FLOOR.

THE COG OF THE CAR AND THE DRIVER ARE AT THE SAME LOCATION LENGTHWISE (X AXIS), ALSO EXACTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WHEELBASE, WHICH SHOULD PROVIDE FOR AN EXCELLENT DRIVERS FEEL. WE AIMED TO FURTHER ACCENTUATE “THE FEEL”, AGAIN WITHOUT ADDITIONAL COMPLICATION, BY PROVIDING LARGE BRAKES, ADJUSTABLE BRAKE BALANCE AND PEDALBOX POSITION, EVEN ROTATION, AND A ROOMY COCKPIT WITH “CAVITIES” TO ALLOW FOR OPTIMAL MOVEMENT. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RENDER IS FROM THE TIME WHEN WE HOPED TO HAVE A CLASSIC BRAKING DESIGN. THE FINAL SOLUTION IS SHOWN A FEW PARAGRAPHS ABOVE.

“THE FEEL” CONTINUES HERE, IN THE STEERING SYSTEM. THE TURNING CIRCLE OF AROUND 5 METERS IS ACHIEVED THROUGH A LARGE STEERING WHEEL WITH GOOD POSITIONING – KEEPING THE STEERING LIGHT AND DRIVERS FRESH. ALL WHILE KEEPING A HIGH VISIBILITY, AROUND 8° DEGREES TOWARDS THE GROUND FOR SHORTEST DRIVERS, AT THE HIGHEST POINT – AND A NON-OBSTRUCTED DASHBOARD VIEW.

A DUAL VOLTAGE, 12 AND 24 VOLT, BATTERY POWERS ALL THE CONTROL ELECTRONICS, THE MOST IMPORTANT BEING THE BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WITH 4 ACTUATOR CONTROL, FULLY DEVELOPED IN-HOUSE (HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE). THE ENGINE CONTROL AND TELEMETRY ARE INTEGRATED BY OUR ECATU SYSTEM, ALONG WITH VARIOUS OTHER SENSORS – CREATING THE CARS “NERVOUS SYSTEM”. THIS ENABLES REAL TIME COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE CAR AND THE BOX, WITH THE SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS THROUGH THE CAN NETWORK.

ADDING MASS ACTING ON THE TIRES, WITHOUT ADDING MASS TO BE ACCELERATED. OUR MODERN CFD ANALYZED AERODYNAMICS SHOULD SHOW A RATIO BETWEEN LIFT AND DRAG COEFFICIENT AROUND 2, AND A 50/50 AERO BALANCE.
BESIDES THE TWO OBVIOUS WINGS, THERE ARE A TOTAL OF THREE LARGE DIFFUSERS – OUR FAVORITE ELEMENTS TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL DOWNFORCE WITHOUT ADDING SIGNIFICANT DRAG.
